A clear window can turn milky with moisture almost overnight, especially after a cold spell, a hot shower, or a busy evening of cooking. While a little water on the room-side glass is common, repeated buildup should not be ignored. If water appears only in one room, consider what is unique about that space. A bedroom with two sleepers and closed doors may need more overnight ventilation. A kitchen window may be close to regular cooking steam. If every window in the property is heavily wet, the overall humidity level or ventilation system deserves a closer look.
How to Reduce Condensation Without Wasting Heat
The goal is not to make your home drafty. It is to remove excess moisture efficiently while retaining comfortable heat. Start with the moisture sources: use extractor fans, cover pans, vent tumble dryers correctly, and avoid drying clothes throughout living spaces where possible.
Then improve air movement. Open windows briefly after high-moisture activities, keep trickle vents unobstructed, and make sure furniture is not pressed tightly against external walls. A dehumidifier can be useful in problem rooms, but it should support good ventilation rather than hide a leak, failed extractor, or insulation issue.
Check the condition of your windows as well. Damaged handles, loose hinges, cracked seals, and gaps around frames can affect how a window performs. For double-glazed units with misting inside the panes, replacing the failed glass unit can often be more cost-effective than replacing the entire frame, depending on its condition.
